Alternative history explores the question: what if history had taken a different course? It usually begins with a real historical event, after which the author changes one or more key factors and shows how this affects the world’s later development.

The central difference from ordinary historical fiction lies in this deliberate alteration of the past. Real countries, people, and events can stand alongside invented wars, political regimes, technologies, and an entirely different future.
