Cultivation is a branch of speculative fiction in which the protagonist steadily develops body, mind, and spiritual power, advancing through ever higher levels of strength. These stories often draw on Eastern philosophy, martial arts, inner energy, spiritual techniques, artifacts, and a strict hierarchy of stages of advancement.

Cultivation is close to progression fantasy, yet has more specific roots and traditions connected above all with Chinese fantasy and ideas of spiritual self-perfection. Here the hero’s growth often means more than simply gaining power: it is about overcoming the limits of human nature and striving for longevity or immortality.
